This Old Piano

This Old Piano is a transformation, where single pianos are deconstructed and designed into new instruments. Headed by pianist Tiffany Lin and wood worker Joel Kikuchi, This Old Piano has commisioned two instrument designers and two composers to collaborate and design, develop, compose for, and exhibit two new instruments. Each instrument is built from the constituent parts of a single free piano.

Pianos will be redesigned into new instruments by Colin Ernst and Hugo Solis. These new creatures will then have original musical works created for them by composers Jherek Bischoff and Tom Baker. Pieces will be performed by Tiffany Lin.

With support from the Jack Straw Foundation, the City of Seattle Mayor's Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, and the Allied Arts Foundation, phase one of This Old Piano will begin construction in a live and open studio format beginning February 2010. A public performance and exhibit will be staged at the Jack Straw Studios and New Media Gallery April 19 - June 4, 2010.
